Practicum
Practicum:
The practicum serves as the practical component of the program, allowing students to apply their newly acquired skills in a real-world work setting. It is a critical phase where students have the opportunity to gain practical experience, enhance self-confidence, and potentially receive offers of employment. The practicum consolidates the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the program.
Knowledge Core Competency Objectives:
- State the importance of developing a reflective practice through keeping a daily journal of practicum experiences.
- Explain the value of each practicum assignment and experience and how it is used to evaluate practices and decisions.
- Explain the value of constructive criticism from others and how to incorporate useful information into personal practice.
Skill Core Competency Objectives:
- Be accountable and make corrections if appropriate; be prepared to explain decisions and actions.
- Demonstrate a willingness to learn from others—co-workers and supervisors.
- Reflect and assess with a view to transferring skills to other situations.
- Demonstrate the ability to adapt skills to address new situations; reflect and evaluate adaptations.
Upon completing the practicum, students are expected to have not only applied their theoretical knowledge and skills in a practical setting but also developed reflective practices, accountability, adaptability, and a willingness to learn from others. The practicum serves as a comprehensive evaluation of the program’s learning outcomes.
