This subject delves into an in-depth understanding of the structure and composition of the nail, identification of nail types, disorders, and conditions. The course covers the performance and customization of hand and foot treatments, along with the comprehensive steps involved in a professional manicure and pedicure. Additionally, it emphasizes explaining to clients the necessary modifications and procedures for effective home care.
Knowledge Core Competency Objectives: Upon completion of this subject, a student is expected to explain nail anatomy and discuss how nail technology tools work.
- Define and explain the importance of anatomy, physiology, and histology of the nails.
- Describe the parts of the nail, including the nail bed, nail plate, matrix, cuticle, eponychium, hyponychium, special ligament, and nail folds.
- List and describe the eight commonly known nail diseases and various nail disorders.
- Describe the four types of nail implements and/or tools required to perform a manicure.
- Describe the five pieces of equipment and three specialty materials used when performing pedicures.
- Describe how to properly use and store each nail product, identify their ingredients, and explain their functions during use.
Skill Core Competency Objectives: Upon completion of this subject, a student is expected to perform Manicure/Pedicure & Treatment and utilize nail health procedures.
- Identify nail types and nail disorders and related conditions.
- Identify the appearance of the normal, healthy nail and recognize diseases and disorders of the nails that should not be treated in the salon.
- Identify viruses, fungus, and mold, examining their causes and appearances.
- Perform the complete steps of a professional manicure and pedicure procedure according to clients’ requirements.
- Perform different types of massage movements most appropriate for hand, foot, arm, and leg massage.
- Perform a paraffin wax treatment on the hand and foot.
